The Standard, 848 Washington Street, New York, NY 10014 tel. 212 645 4646; the latest Hot Spot in New York’s Hotel Scene is the bar at the Standard which is located in the MeatPacking District right at the High Line (which will be finalized sometimes 2009). The view of the rooms are amazing, overlooking the Hudson with a breathtaking sunset. As with every Andre Balazs owned property, the staff is uniformly young, beautiful and hip and also unbelieveably competent. The Pool will be open to the public in May 2009.
Gramercy Park Hotel, 2 Lexington Ave., New York, NY 10010 tel. 212 920 3300; this hotel exists since 1924 (Bogat married actress Helen Menken on the rooftop). After a complete gutting the Hotel reopened in August 2006. All rooms custom designed by Julian Schnabel and with amazing Art hanging in the big library room (with a gigantic fireplace) - is this one of my favorit spots for a Saturday afternoon tea or a glass of Champagne to kick start the Saturday night.
Chelsea Hotel, 222 West 23rd Street, New York, NY 10011 tel. 212 243 3700; the Hotel is one of the city’s most notorious landmarks, a hotspot brimming with character even as it sinks into old age. Sid Vicious fatally stabbed his girlfriend here in 1978; Arthur C. Clarks’s 2001 and partf of William S Burroughs’ “Naked Lunch” were drated here. Ask for a renovated room with a private balcony. And the (alleged) ghost sightings, are free of charge.
apizz, 217 Eldridge Street, New York, NY 10002 tel. 212 253 9199; one of the finest Restaurant in the Lower East Side. Once you schlepped yourself down there and are inside apizz, you’ll be in no rush to leave its rustic and ingratiating hearthside. for not only do you instantly warm to a room built around an imposing, cycloramic brick oven but the aromas wafting from LaFemina’s homey and hearfelt dishes like wild-boar lasange, boccie ready meatballs with ricotta, and apple crumble impart their own seductive heat. Perfect for a cold winter evening or a romantic date.
Raoul’s, 180 Prince Street, New York, NY 10012 tel. 212 966 3518; this Soho bistro was a pinoeer when it opened in the mid seventies. Decorated with nudes, jazz portraits and tin ceiling and walls, this is where Europeans, kitten-like models, and longtime locals linger over thick steak au poivre with crispy frites, and fleshy steamed artichokes with thick dipping vinaigrette. A great hot spot - always ask for reservations in the front room - at the bar.
BONDST, 6 Bond Street, New York, NY 10012 tel. 212 777 2500; the crowd is too cool, the rooms too cozy, the waiteres way too pretty. No way is this anywhere you’re going to get chirashi worth much more than a can of Bumble bee. You are about to be suprised. With food this fresh, original and virbantly spiced, the kitchen can easily taken on most traditional midtown sushi houses. My personal favourits are the braised pork, the arugula-carrot-crispy patatoe rolls with lots of spicy mayo. As well as the Edamame. Ask to get seated upstairs once you see the host.
